15 inch MacBook Pro

I’ve only had the 15” unit a little over a week now but this particular laptop has still been given quite a workout. The 15” has not only been tested with many of OS X’s built in applications but also has a virtual machine running.

The processor in the 15” is only slightly faster than the one in my 13” but I still compared the two by editing photos in iPhoto. I also did some movie editing with clips in iMovie and Quicktime X’s new built in editing tools. Whilst the performance on the 15” was marginally superior the difference is negligible. That wasn’t surprising though considering that RAM, CPU and hard drive speed specifications on the two are very similar.

The big selling point of this particular 15 inch MacBook Pro then is the improved graphics chip in the form of a 9600M GT as opposed to the solitary 9400M in the 13”. Initially I tested Sim City 4 and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock to put the 9600M GT through its paces and when compared to my 13” framerates were higher even at increased detail and resolution settings. Not content to just stop there however I finally relented and set up a Boot Camp partition with Windows XP running and got some more graphically intense games running. Fallout 3 was first up and even at high detail settings the game is smooth.
