OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard finally launched internationally on the 28th of August, but Mac Action waited patiently until the 1st of September to get our paws on it at Core’s press launch.
As far as first impressions go Snow Leopard certainly has a lot of potential. The upgrade from Leopard was seamless and only took just under an hour. Once done however you could be forgiven for thinking this is Leopard with a new Desktop, but after a while a few notable differences start appearing.
The Stacks in your Dock are now a more complete system with a few nifty features, including the ability to preview certain files from within your Stack. Quicktime X is also a worthwhile addition to Snow Leopard’s armory, the built in editing tools are simple to use and very streamlined in terms of performance.
I have however been a little disappointed in the incessant updating required to run applications that ran fine in Leopard, surely the base Snow Leopard should be more up to date than my admittedly out-of-date Leopard.
There is a lot more to Snow Leopard than what I have mentioned here, in particular the extensive 64-bit support, but you’ll just have to wait for the next edition of Mac Action to read all about it.
